WP1: Collecting the information for bridging the gap
between SRI and EU citizens

The current situation of the SRI at the level of the European Commission, its degree of development at the stage where the project will be implemented and relevant activities in the Member States with regard to the development and introduction of national SRIs will be identified. One of the objectives of the Smart² project is to bring the SRI closer to the European citizens. To achieve this, the project team will target in terms of D1.2, to release the SRI FAQ guide, an initiative to simplify knowledge and understanding about SRI, a sort of SRI for Dummies guide.

An annual publication (English), to overview the state of development of the SRI (EN)

The environment in which SRI is tested and implemented is expected to change in the 3 years of Smart² project’s implementation. Smart² establishes an observatory for the evolution of SRI in Europe. The purpose will be twofold: to record the developments in the field of SRI at both EU and national levels plus to adapt the content and data of the Smart² tool to the changing context. The SRI Observatory will publish 3 Annual SRI Outlooks on the SRI in Europe (September 2023, Ditto 2024, Ditto 2025).

Report on existing public financing tools for promotion of buildings smartness (EN)

This report will record the current status in relation to funds and tools, which could potentially finance the promotion of SRI in the Member States by considering the SRI in the definition of eligibility criteria alongside energy efficiency. D1.4 will also analyze investment schemes that are currently in place, which could be considered for replication. This overview analysis will result to the definition of good funding practices which will be included as integral dissemination material of the project, in both the SRI Virtual Training Centre, as well as in the SRI Days. WP2: Rolling out ICT and smart ready technologies for Smarter SRIs

Integration roadmap of SRI into EPC (EN)

The output of this Task will be the content and the architecture energy module of the Smart² platform, which will include the procedures to follow for the extraction of SRIs through EPC input data, the cross-correlation of EPC and SRI classes, and the development of an API for documenting the required attributes from an ifc document for the extraction of the SRI. The assess-ment will be performed both for residential and commercial buildings. The task will deliver a roadmap for the integration of the SRI into the EPC schema.

Adoption of the SRI context to AI practices (EN)

Artificial intelligence technologies hold great promise in the operation, use and continuous commissioning of buildings. In this report, sector leader and Smart² partner Brainbox AI will lead the consortium through a documentation of strategies for the use of AI in the SRI assessment in methods A, B and C (e.g. in both static and dynamic states). AI technologies will be put to use and assessed that the Italian pilot of Piazza Loreto.

Data transmission security analysis for the purpose of assessment of smart buildings (EN)

Deliverable 2.3 presents the results of Task 2.3. The purpose of Task 2.3 is to develop the appropriate framework for the assessment of transmitted data from smart sensors and smart buildings and the assessment of this data towards delivering the SRI. Issues related to interoperability protocols, big data management, cybersecurity, data integrity, data anonymization and user privacy will be analyzed and presented. Moreover, this task will examine the SRI's information security risks, considering the threats, vulnerabilities, and impacts. The design of a coherent and comprehensive suite of information security controls and other forms of risk treatment will also be presented. Explicit focus will be given on securing not only the infrastructure but also in making sure that all user privacy concerns and rights are considered in all stages. Finally, existing legislation on the protection of personal data will be followed.

SRI integration roadmap to digital building logbooks (EN)

Digital building logbooks capture, make accessible and make useful various types of building data over a building’s life cycle. Two strategies are developed in Smart² with respect to strategies for the use of digital building logbooks and the SRI and will be documented in this report. The first is the use of a DBL to store SRI data. What data to be stored, how to make it accessible and strategies to make it useful. The second strategy will be the use of DBLs for the calculation of the SRI. Given a DBL, what to access and how to complement that in order to accelerator or make automatic the SRI assessment calculation.

Report on Smart² Architecture (English)

Deliverable 3.1 will present the results of Task 3.1 and specifically the Software Requirement Specifications (SRS) and the architecture of the Smart2 tool. The software requirements specification (SRS) and accomplishments of the Smart² application will be drafted, the functionalities, the use cases based on the target market, the use of the tool, and the platforms to be employed will be identified. An initial overview of competing applications will also be implemented. Issues of interoperability of the application with other computer literacy will be examined as well.

Functionable Smart² backend and frontend (EN)

Deliverable 3.2 provides the frontend and backend of the Smart² platform. The public deliverable will be a user-friendly and well-crafted software user manual and worked examples (white paper), describing the main operations of the Smart² platform. The content of the white paper will include general instructions, the tool organization and overview of the operation, assistance and problems reporting, installation and setup, first-time user instructions, errors and recovery from errors as well as a quick reference guide.

Smart² functionable beta version (24 EU MS languages)

D3.3 includes the description of all activities targeted to the rigorous testing of the tool, under a variety of real-world scenarios through alpha and beta testers. All technical flows detected and corrected will also be described. The testing will be mainly implemented by beta testers who were not part of the development team to test and evaluate the prototype and the beta version.

Procedures for conducting an on-site SRI Audit (EN)

D4.1 summarizes the novel SRI methodology which will be developed within the project, based on well-established building audit concepts, and specifically on the energy audit procedures described under the EN 16247-20012 standards series. The deliverable will include the comparative assessment between the needs of an energy and an SRI audit, and the definition of the required components for the SRI audit procedure. This will set the ground for developing the step-by-step standardized process for the performance of on-site SRI audits.

Methodology on monetization of SRI upgrade recommendations (EN)

Deliverable 4.2 describes in detail methodology to monetize main SRI upgrades in buildings and required guidelines for drafting and prioritizing the SRI upgrade recommendations in an SRI audit. The methodology will be based on principles of life cycle costing as well as on the factor-based method for quantifying the energy savings of smartness upgrade, based on the provisions of the ISO 52120:2021 standard. Worked examples will be also provided.

Task 5.1 is related to the establishment of the SRI Call Centre, which will act as a hub of information and improvement of the SRI and the issuance of SRI Ratings by the call centre.  The SRI Call Centre operational principles will be presented in this report as well as the results of the online assessment survey material. An evaluation of the results regarding the issuance of the SRI Ratings (target of 3600 SRI ratings) will also be presented. Finally, a non-public report on the self-sustaining business model of the SRI call centre after the completion of the project will also be delivered.

The Smart² project will establish and operate the SRI Virtual Training Centre (VTC), to be hosted in the CEN-CE Learning Management System. The SRI VTC will provide learning material related to the understanding of the major principles of the SRI, as well as the Smart² informative material targeted to different stakeholders’ groups. The deliverable will include a public part describing all the activities and outcomes (+ interactive infographic will be prepared for promotion) and a non-public report on the self-sustaining business model of the SRI VTC in the project’s afterlife.

Promotional Material – 6 Smart² pilot communities – 14 Smart² candidate building blocks (EN)

The main output of this task is to establish the concept of Smart Ready Community - building complexes in which all buildings are SRI certified and have their performances monitored. Multimedia materials will be prepared to demonstrate the procedures for the issuance of SRI certificates on an urban block scale, through documentation that attest the relation between the energy and the smartness performance of buildings.
