Smart² Project showcases Innovation at the 9th International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Technologies

The Smart² Project proudly participated in the 9th International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Technologies, held in Split and Bol (Island of Brac), Croatia, from June 25th to 28th, 2024. This prestigious event gathered experts, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss and showcase the latest advancements in smart and sustainable technologies. The Smart² project contributed significantly to the conference, presenting two innovative papers in the special session: Advancements in Assessing the Smartness of Buildings in Europe: The SRI Scheme and Beyond.

Special Session Highlights

The special session aimed to highlight cutting-edge innovations in assessing building smartness across Europe, focusing on the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) Scheme. This session featured critical contributions from EU-funded research projects, offering insights and frameworks essential for enhancing building smartness. Discussions covered the latest advancements in smart building technologies, regulatory developments, and key findings from significant EU-funded projects.

The Smart Square project presented two pioneering papers during the Special Session:

  1. Simplifying Smart Readiness: A Novel Tool for Rapid SRI Assessment in European Buildings
    • Authors: Nicholas Afxentiou (Frederick University, Cyprus), Ourania Douni and Nicholas Paraskakis (Euphyia-Tech Ltd, Cyprus), Paris Fokaides (Frederick University, Cyprus)
    • This paper introduces an innovative tool from the EU-funded Smart Square project to simplify Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) calculations for buildings. This tool provides a streamlined approach to evaluating building smart readiness.
  2. From Buildings to Neighbourhoods: Upscaling Smartness Assessment for Enhanced Sustainability
    • Authors: Afroditi Zamanidou (IsZEB DIH & University of Western Macedonia, Greece), Antonello Magliozzi (Arcadis Italia Srl, Italy), Paris Fokaides (Frederick University, Cyprus)
    • This research delineates a strategic pathway towards refining sustainability evaluations at the neighborhood level, by enriching the discussion on creating sustainable, resilient, and intelligent urban environments, offering invaluable insights for urban planners, policymakers, and stakeholders engaged in smart city initiatives.

SRI Day: Hands-On Experience with Smart Building Technologies

During the conference, an SRI Day provided participants with an in-depth exploration of the SRI tool and the Smart² platform. Attendees had the unique opportunity to dive deep into the functionalities and applications of these innovative tools. Additionally, they could obtain their building’s SRI assessment on the spot, thanks to the Smart² partners who conducted rapid evaluations, delivering results in just a few minutes. This hands-on experience underscored the practicality and efficiency of the Smart² solutions in promoting smart building practices.

Significance and Impact

The participation of the Smart² project in this conference underscores its commitment to advancing the smartness of buildings in Europe. By contributing to discussions on the SRI Scheme and showcasing innovative tools and methodologies, the project continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of smart and sustainable building solutions.
